The Clear Future: Fundamentals of Cannabis Distillates
Cannabis has come a long way from simply the bud and flower. These days, there is a new production technique that is hitting the market: distillation. Likely to be the future of commercial marijuana, cannabis distillate is nicknamed “the clear” or “the pure” since the end product is transparent, flavourless, odourless and has a potency level of roughly 90%.
Cannabis distillates are the next level of cannabis science. The process involved is very different from how other concentrates – such as wax, shatter or hash – are made.
How Does Cannabis Distillation Work?
The process of distillation is a centuries-old method. It is this same process used for making cannabis distillates, by which heat is employed to vaporize cannabinoids. There are three steps to making cannabis distillate:
Step 1 – The first step to making a cannabis distillate is to decarboxylate or de-carb the cannabis oil. This process converts any THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Once this process is done, you’ll be left with highly concentrated cannabis oil.
Step 2 – To turn this cannabis oil into cannabis distillate, heat is required. During this heating process, the cannabinoids are separated from any unwanted waste materials that are still in the oil.
Step 3 – Once the cannabinoids are vaporized, the vapour is collected into a cooling system where the waste products are removed from the cannabinoids. When the good and bad parts of the oil are separated, you’ll end up with a clear cannabis distillate that has a potency of around 90% THC.
The distillation process is more expensive than any other extraction method, and this cost often translates to a high price tag on the end product. However, it is all worth it.
How to Consume Cannabis Distillates
There are many ways to enjoy cannabis distillates. Since it is odourless and flavourless, cannabis distillate can be added to a variety of products, such as:
Edibles – Edibles are food items that have been infused with cannabinoids. This ultra-refined cannabis concentrate doesn’t impart the hash-y or plant taste of old-school edibles. This allows for the flavour of the edible to really come through.
Pharmaceuticals – The use of medical cannabis is on the rise, as it can be used to treat many illnesses and health conditions. Making medicines with cannabis distillate can offer an alternative for those who do not want to smoke their medical marijuana.
Vapes – Cannabis distillate is easy to vape. It produces minimal smell and smoke if any at all.
In addition, cannabis distillate can help keep the dosing accurate, no matter where it is added. The potency doesn’t change. If one gram of cannabis distillate contains roughly 900 – 1000 milligrams of THC, the final product will also have 900 – 1000 milligrams of THC.
