Some Interesting Info on Marijuana

The Internet

The very first product sold using the early Internet was a bag of weed between Stanford and MIT students. It was definitely the beginning of two good things.

THC Discovery

THC was discovered in Israel in 1964 at the Weizmann Institute of Science by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam and his colleagues as the active ingredient in marijuana. In case you’ve been living in a closet for a while, it’s the stuff that gets you high.

CBD Discovery

Dr. Mechoulam also isolated cannabidiol (CBD). According to Dr. Mechoulam and the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the USA, CBD is completely non-toxic and has zero side effects. It is one of the least toxic compounds the good doctor has seen over his long career. CBD is the main ingredient responsible for many of marijuana’s medical benefits.

Who’s First?

It appears the Chinese were first to write about marijuana in 2737 BC. Emperor Shen Nong, who also was a pharmacologist, documented weed as useful for many ailments. These included memory, rheumatism, gout and constipation. The intelligent Emperor tested many other herbs personally. Yikes – he was brave!

The Egyptians appeared to use Marijuana for cancer treatment as early as the 2nd Century. The Ancient Greeks also used it as medicine for both humans and animals.

Over the Counter

Marijuana/cannabis products were widely prescribed in the late 1800’s and 1900’s in the US. It was listed as an acceptable medical product in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). In 1942 it was removed from the USP and has not returned yet.

Canada – First Country to Grab a Brain

Canada was the first country in the world to legalize marijuana for medical use. The main usage was originally for treatment of chronic pain. Chronic stupidity is keeping other nations from legalizing medical marijuana.

Marijuana is Safe

One would need more than 1,500 pounds of marijuana to overdose. Oh yeah, you would have to smoke it all in less than 15 minutes to die. Try that sometime. LOL.

Marijuana is Good for You

Besides all the medical benefits, marijuana actually helps growth of new brain cells (Neurogenesis). One study indicated Neurogenesis in the hippocampus. The hippocampus is responsible for a number of critical functions including memory and mood.

Lung Damage

Despite claims that smoking marijuana is the same as smoking cigarettes, there is no connection between marijuana and lung damage/cancer. In fact, it appears to protect against lung damage.

Legalization Saves Lives

According to the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research, legal access to medical marijuana results in a substantial decrease in abuse and death from prescription painkillers.

Also, suicide rates are lower where medical marijuana is available. Some say this may be due to replacing alcohol consumption. Who cares why, the result is what matters.

Europe

Oddly, despite many European countries having approved medical marijuana, only the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands grow weed (as of the time of posting).

One of the strictest countries for drug use, Germany approved medical marijuana in January 2017. The German government recommends marijuana for about 30 illnesses. And it is up to each doctor to prescribe and without a qualification list.

Canada has started exporting weed. Who would have thought that day would come?
